Big Buddha

Samui's most popular attraction, the Big Buddha was built in 1972 by the local society to give visitors a place to worship. This monumental landmark is placed on the island's Northern shore.
Most Visitors come to marvel at the sheer size and beauty of this remarkable statue at some point during their holiday. Visible from several kilometers away and even from the air when arriving on or leaving the island, the 12 meter tall golden image sits proudly at water's edge.
Elements of Buddhism, Brahminism and animism are apparent in the design, ornamentation and ritual connected with this popular shrine and meditation center. The gaudy bazaar within the temple grounds offers souvenirs both secular and religious - everything from T-shirts and hats to protective amulets. Spiritual concerns and everyday life tend to overlap in Buddhist centers. Big Buddha Temple, or Wat Phra Yai, is in the Northeast of Samui on route 4171 near the airport.
